Dear Members,
Welcome to our summer season! London Climate Action Week, Refugee Week and Pride are keeping us busy, leading thinkers from Beeban Kidron and Misha Glenny (16/06, 6.15pm) to John Kampfner and Robert Peston (06/07, 6.15pm) will be crossing our threshold, and that’s not all! Here’s a summary of what we’re looking forward to.
We got in the LCAW spirit early this year, with a workshop devised by member, activist and founder of Force of Nature, Clover Hogan: Beyond the Choir: Climate Messaging in a Polarised World, now available to watch back on our YouTube. On 18 June, we’re collaborating with Climate Minister Katie White MP on the inaugural Pride in Our Planet Awards, supported by Sky. Conduit members are invited to join guests from across business, media, politics and community action for this celebration of the unsung heroes tackling climate challenges around the country. As The Conduit is an official LCAW hub again this year, we kick off with our Climate and the Future of Health conference (22/06), with a special price for Conduit members.
On Wednesday 24 June, we have an exclusive screening –the first in Europe–of Plan C for Civilization. This documentary tackles the promise and peril of the controversial climate-cooling technology, solar geoengineering. Join us for a screening of the film followed by breakout discussions of the film’s future and whether, in a planetary emergency, any idea is too risky to explore (24/06, signups opening soon). On Thursday 25 June, we are collaborating with Friends of the Thames on a panel discussion dedicated to UK rivers: their rights, their future and our responsibility towards them (25/06). On Friday 26 June, we welcome the National Emergency Briefing team to the club to reflect on their campaign, hear insights and from their experts and Conduit members alike, and to screen their new film, the People’s Emergency Briefing (26/06, 3pm).
In need of more nature? Good news! On Monday 8 June, we collaborate with Grow Urban festival for Growing Resilient Urban Ecosystems, exploring how natural habitats in our cities can help people, plants and wildlife thrive. We are thrilled to host this event just next door at Guinness Vaults. All members are entitled to a free drink on us (options other than Guinness are available!), to help tempt you across the courtyard (08/06, 6.30pm). Then on 7 July, biologist and journalist Rowan Hooper presents his new book Togetherness: Symbiosis and the Hidden Story of Life’s Greatest Collaborations, asking what we humans might learn from small miracles of co-operation between flora and fauna (07/07, 6.15pm, signups opening soon).
Refugee Week runs from 15 June and we begin proceedings with a very special evening of music and poetry, in collaboration with Odyssey Ensemble (15/06, 6.45pm). Later that week, we spotlight the work of SOS Méditerranée in a special edition Ubuntu Hour (17/06, 6pm).
June is also Pride Month, and one of the ways we’re celebrating is by welcoming Chris Bryant, the first gay MP to celebrate his civil partnership in the Palace of Westminster, to walk us through his unorthodox journey into politics (10/06, 6.15pm). Miscellaneous highlights of the season include our event with Hettie O’Brien and Vicky Spratt: How Private Equity Sold Out the West (rescheduled to Monday 1 June), Molly Crabapple and Jon Lee Anderson on the Jewish Bund and its radical vision of solidarity in an age of division (02/06, 6.15pm), Federica Amati and Rhiannon Lambert on the biology of appetite (03/06, 6.15pm), The Media Society taking stock of the world of podcasts (09/06, 6.30pm) and Conduit favourite Oliver Bullough returning for an event with Anja Shortland on hacking and ransomware (17/06, 6.15pm). On 13 July we welcome Zoë Arden who works at the intersection of storytelling and leadership for an event on how to communicate purpose and build connection.
And there’s even more yet to be announced…
Looking forward to seeing you over the summer months,
Lily, Asha and Paula
