In collaboration with Pranvera Shema Smith, founder of On Front Line.
At The Conduit, we recently hosted a panel discussion that delved into the heart of Pakistan’s political sphere. The event, presented in partnership with On Frontline, focused on the tempest brewing around the figure of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister and opposition leader. This year has been pivotal for Pakistan, with national and provincial elections on the horizon, yet no date set. The nation’s political stability teeters on the precipice, exacerbated by economic struggles and the aftermath of devastating floods.
Imran Khan, who ascended to power in 2018, was ousted from office last year following a vote of no confidence. His arrest on the 9th of May marked a significant turn of events, following a series of near misses in previous attempts to detain him. These events have left the country in a state of uncertainty, with the question of what transpires next in the world’s largest Islamic republic becoming more pressing than ever.
Our panel discussion, held on the 19th of June, brought together a diverse group of experts, including Christina Lamb, Saima Mohsin, and Secunder Kermani. The discourse revolved around the current state of affairs in Pakistan, the challenges it faces, and the role of Imran Khan in the country’s political landscape.
Christina Lamb, one of Britain’s leading foreign correspondents, noted the cyclical nature of Pakistan’s politics, where each new leader arrests their predecessor. She expressed concern over the lack of new faces in Pakistan’s political scene, stating,
“I cannot think of another country that I cover where in 35 years it’s still pretty much the same characters running the country.”
Saima Mohsin, a presenter on Sky News and an International Correspondent, echoed Lamb’s sentiments. She emphasised the need for political education in Pakistan and the importance of acknowledging the truth about what transpires within the country.
Secunder Kermani, a British journalist and Foreign Correspondent for Channel 4 News, highlighted the rise of social media in Pakistan. He noted that it has increased the accessibility for the ordinary person to make their voice heard in the discourse.
The discussion was underscored by the urgent need for leadership and stability in Pakistan. As the country grapples with its internal challenges, the role of Imran Khan remains a focal point of discussion. His political journey, marked by triumphs and tribulations, continues to shape the narrative of Pakistan’s politics.
The panelists also discussed the impact of international relations on Pakistan’s politics, particularly its complex and consequential relationships with its neighbours, India and Afghanistan. These relationships, often marked by tension and conflict, have significant implications for Pakistan’s domestic politics and its role on the global stage.
In conclusion, the discussion provided a comprehensive and nuanced perspective on the political landscape of Pakistan. It highlighted the complexities and challenges of Pakistan’s politics, the pivotal role of Imran Khan, and the urgent need for political stability and leadership in the country. As Pakistan navigates its political future, the insights from this discussion offer valuable context and understanding of the issues at hand. As The Conduit, we remain committed to fostering such insightful dialogues and providing a platform for in-depth discussions on critical global issues.
