Green Riders: The Screen Industry Takes Action on the Climate Crisis
Lucian Msamati and the Green Rider campaign show how actors and producers can lead the fight for a safer, more sustainable planet.
The LA fires have brought the climate crisis right into the iconic home of the entertainment industry. So, what now? What if TV & film could set the standard for how we respond to climate disasters? The actor-led Green Rider campaign is doing just that, empowering screen workers to transform long-standing traditions of wasteful consumption into pioneering levels of sustainability.
At its core, the Green Rider is a union-backed contract addition that sets out an actor’s commitment to green practices and fair sharing of resources. It opens collaboration with productions, supercharging the push for TV & Film sets to be cleaner and greener. Led by passionate “actor-vists” and supported by talent like Benedict Cumberbatch and Gemma Arterton, the Green Rider flips the script on star culture: encouraging talent to use their influence not for consumption, but climate action.
At The Conduit, we’ll discuss with a panel of actors and creatives how this groundbreaking initiative can reshape the entertainment industry and inspire global change, envisioning a future where creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Green Rider is a movement of actors using their influence to create a cleaner, greener, and fairer TV & film industry. Founded by Equity member “actor-vists,” the initiative encourages performers to lead by example—promoting sustainable on-set practices, reducing waste, and shifting industry norms away from overconsumption.
By advocating for climate-conscious choices on set, Green Rider challenges outdated ideas of status—moving away from oversized trailers and private jets toward a culture of responsibility and innovation. With the support of leading actors, the campaign is flipping the script on sustainability, proving that green practices can be aspirational, accessible, and impactful.
