State of the Nation Debate: Is the UK on the right track?

For years the story of Britain has been one of decline. Stagnant wages, crumbling public services, a politics that promised much and delivered little. But sentiment seems to have shifted. A new government under Andy Burnham has taken office, vowing to do things differently: to break Westminster’s grip, push power out to the regions, and tackle the thorny problems successive governments ducked, chief among them the social care crisis.

The public appears to be listening. Labour have retaken the lead in the polls for the first time in 18 months. Does this moment reflect a genuine reset or temporary transition? At a time of rising costs of living, global uncertainty, and wavering trust in politics, public mood is being tested, and the country faces profound questions about how to shape its future. How will Burnham deliver lasting prosperity and economic security? How does he rebuild trust in institutions? And how do we navigate this era of deepening socio-political polarisation? These are difficult challenges.

Supporters of the motion will argue that the country has finally found its feet. That radical devolution answers the democratic frustration that fuelled a decade of anger, and that a government willing to touch care, the third rail of British politics, is a government serious about the future. This, they will say, is the moment Britain rediscovers its mojo.

Opponents will argue that a plan is not the same as delivery. That Burnham has inherited the same broken machinery as his predecessors, and that a nation cannot devolve or legislate its way out of decline without the money and the growth to pay for it.
