Afghan politician, journalist and a prominent Muslim feminist Shukria Barakzai as she reflects on the future of Afghanistan, 5 months since she fled the nation following the dramatic takeover by the Taliban.
In August 2021, everyone was taken aback by the swift fall of the Ghani government and the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. The Taliban targeted many Afghans who worked for the government and for foreign organisations.
Afghan politician, journalist and a prominent Muslim feminist Shukria Barakzai hid in the city, along with her husband, moving from one place to the next. As Kabul airport descended into chaos, Shukria began messaging everyone she knew who might help them get out. In the early hours of Monday, August 23rd Shukria and her husband arrived in the UK on a military jet into RAF Brize Norton, thanks to Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, and others who continued to pressure Whitehall.
A conversation with Shukria, who’ll be talking to CNN’s chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward about her ordeal and the future of Afghanistan as she sees it.
