State of the Nation Debate: Progressive Politics Will Fix Britain
June 1, 6:30 pm
June 1, 6:30 pm
Living costs are rising, trust in politics is wavering and we are surrounded by global uncertainties. The public mood is being tested and the country is facing profound questions about how to shape its future. How do we deliver lasting prosperity and economic security? How do we rebuild trust in institutions? And how do we navigate this era of deepening socio-political polarisation?
It’s not long until Britain heads to the polls to vote in the local elections. In the weeks that follow, devolved nations and regions will begin to settle into a new local government landscape. The headlines and seat counts will tell us the story of who the public trusts to deliver the best answers to these defining questions.
That’s why in partnership with Purpose Union, The Conduit is bringing together leading voices from across politics and the media to debate the motion:
“This House believes that progressive politics will fix Britain.”
Some will argue that progressive politics offers the clearest route to renewal: tackling inequalities and rebuilding public services. They will make the case that bold, values-led leadership can help restore both hope and trust and deliver meaningful progress.
Opponents will challenge whether progressive approaches can truly meet the moment. They will argue that the left place too much emphasis on divisive identity politics and that British politics should put British people first. For them, fixing Britain means putting fairness and control back into the hands of the public.
Join us for a timely and thought-provoking discussion as we reflect on the outcomes of the local elections, explore the evolving priorities of the British public, and debate which political vision can offer a credible path forward.
