Sapling Spirits, Two Drifters Distillery & Nc’nean Distillery have led the way in making spirits more sustainable. For one night only they will be coming together to discuss the challenges and importance of keeping sustainability at the forefront of a business.

Sapling Spirits is a climate-positive British spirits brand founded with a mission to put the fun into sustainability, for every bottle they sell a tree is planted. Two Drifters is a carbon negative British rum brand – every decision they make takes into account the environmental impact of their production. Not to be out done, Nc’nean is an independent, organic whisky distillery founded with a mission to create experimental spirits and pioneer sustainable production.

The panel will be followed by sustainable cocktails created by The Conduit team, using all three spirit brands.

Speakers:

Ed Faulkner is a Co-Founder at Sapling Spirits and has a Masters in Environmental Policy. He is passionate about nature based solutions to climate change with a focus on tree planting, agroforestry, and regenerative farming.

Russ Wakeham is the CEO and Co-Founder of Two Drifters Distillery in Devon. Russ’s academic career focused on chemistry research into carbon capture, storage and utilisation and trying to make CO2 have value. CO2 has a dramatic effect on the planet’s atmosphere but is often overlooked in lots of areas of life, because you can’t see an invisible pile of CO2 building up in the sky. Raising awareness of this issue is the passion and mission for Russ and now Two Drifters. Since 2019, Two Drifters Distillery has permanently removed over 35 tonnes of CO2 through Direct Air Capture, avoided creating over 170 tonnes of CO2, increased capacity to over 2,500 bottles of rum a week and achieved B Corp Certification in January this year. With award-winning rums and a genuine carbon negative footprint, Two Drifters are showing the drinks industry that more can, and must, be done to avoid, reduce and remove CO2.

Annabel Thomas is the CEO and Founder of Nc’nean Distillery on the west coast of Scotland. A former strategy consultant, she set out to create Nc’nean in 2013 with a mission to change the way the world thinks about whisky from Scotland. Innovation and creativity are at the heart of the company’s philosophy and their award winning, organic single malt whisky has been making waves since its launch in August 2020 (including a world record-breaking £41,000 bid for the first bottle). Nc’nean has an uncompromising focus on sustainability: in July 2021 Nc’nean became the UK’s first whisky distillery to be verified as net zero for scopes 1 & 2, all its products are certified organic and its bottle is 100% recycled glass. In January 2022 it announced it was certified a B Corp.

Kyle Soo is the Partnerships & Product Manager at B Lab UK and is helping to support the growth of the B Corp community. With a background in social innovation, service design and criminal law, as well as a practice as a Lego Serious Play Facilitator, he combines these experiences to support people and organisations in being forces for good.
