Poems from the Front Line
Tues 17 Dec, 6pm – 7:30pm
Tues 17 Dec, 6pm – 7:30pm
Channel 4 News International Editor Lindsey Hilsum draws on 40 years of reporting from war zones to share a unique collection of poems and memories. Always carrying a book of poetry, Hilsum has found comfort and meaning in verses that speak to the horrors and humanity of conflict. In Ukraine, she shared a poem a day, inspiring readers worldwide.
In I Brought the War with Me, Lindsey brings together war poems from across cultures and centuries, each accompanied by powerful reflections from her work—interviewing warlords, meeting child soldiers, and witnessing genocide. With prose that captures humour, resilience, and the tragic absurdity of war, she explores the human side of conflict and its enduring impact.
Actress Lisa Dwan, known for her acclaimed performances of Samuel Beckett’s works, will read selected poems, while poet and founder of the Forward Prizes for Poetry, William Sieghart, will chair the discussion.
