Biden and Trump appear set for a rematch in the upcoming US Presidential elections after securing their party nominations. Concerns about Biden’s age persist, while Trump faces 91 criminal charges across four court cases, yet is still leading in several opinion polls.
In Turkey, Istanbul is set to be a key battleground in the upcoming local elections, with a fierce contest expected between President Erdoğan’s party and the opposition’s incumbent mayor.
Meanwhile, India‘s democratic status has been further downgraded, now labelled as “one of the worst autocracies” in the Democracy Report 2024 by the V-Dem Institute. This reflects a continued erosion of democratic freedoms, including freedom of expression, media independence, and civil liberties, with the government also moving to implement a migrant law that excludes Muslims.Speakers:
Dr Leslie Vinjamuri is director of the US and Americas programme and is chair of the faculty of the Queen Elizabeth II Academy at Chatham House. Leslie leads research initiatives on America’s Changing Global Role, Reimagining Multilateralism, and the US, Geopolitics, and the Global South. She is the author most recently of Why Multilateralism Still Matters (Foreign Affairs) and is a Professor of International Relations at SOAS University of London.
Alexander Christie-Miller is a former Turkey correspondent for The Times and author of TO THE CITY: Life and Death Along the Ancient Walls of Istanbul
Alpa Shah is a social anthropologist and writer specialising in South Asia. She is Professor of Anthropology at London School of Economics and author of the award-winning Nightmarch: Among India’s Revolutionary Guerrillas. a finalist for the 2019 Orwell Prize for Political Writing. Her latest book is The Incarcerations is published this month.
