Bedrooms of London
In a city where extreme poverty and wealth exist side-by-side, Bedrooms of London looked to make visible the often shocking and unseen realities of home life for the 700,000 children living below the poverty line within our capital. Challenging the prejudices and stereotypes associated with child poverty, Bedrooms of London highlights this situation for some of London’s most vulnerable children.
The lives and living spaces of London’s most disadvantaged children are laid bare through photography and the voice of the dispossessed. The Bedrooms of London book documents the hidden and often shocking reality facing children such as Edward (4) and his mother Genevieve who have virtually no possessions, and Rory (6) who used to sleep on the night bus with his mum but now lives in “just a room with a toilet and a shower in it”.
Amidst grinding poverty and the daily challenge to survive, stories of Londoners coming together to provide care, kindness and support for our most vulnerable children bring inspiring glimmers of hope.
